Vell… I laughed and realized we all have funny stories when it comes to our parents and their wisdom in selecting “the perfect” name for their little darlings.

My dear pal Carole Reid gets the prize for a near miss - though I do think Queenie is rather… hmmm… regal! Yeah, that’s it, regal!  LOL (I wonder if anyone, in her inner circle, calls Queen Elizabeth, Queenie… just wonderin’.)

Here’s Carole’s comment, just in case you missed it! (Click or Zoom in)

OKAY… HERE WE GO…

Today, I’m going to shed some light on WRITING. (Odd isn’t it, this word begins with W… hmm… wonder what that’s all about?)

Here’s what I’ve learned along the way.

YOU HAVE TO DO IT YOURSELF - the writing that is!

Having an ideal reader (that’s Stephen King’s term and I like it, so I’m using it, so there) is very helpful. (In my case, I have an Ideal Listener.) What’s an ideal reader/listener? - someone who doesn’t bullshit you about what you’ve written. If it sucks, they let you know.

It pays to hire professionals. (Don’t rely on the goodwill of talented friends, it’s not nice!)

Do not bore your friends with your writing ambitions. They won’t take you serious until your first book is published. That’s a fact!

Jump in with both feet. Then, you might actually land and stay upright. I teeter and I totter but I’m still standing.

But the most important thing I learned along the way….

There are no short cuts. Daily word count equals book. You must write daily. If you don’t, well, do the math.

Well, what do you want? More okay, this post is a teaser! How's that!

Are you working toward a goal - writing or otherwise?

Cheers, Jenny

  1. So, Jenny, have you heard the story of the farmer who had a tornado come up upon him suddenly. He ran to shelter and each time he peaked out, he saw things flying by but when he looked out toward were his bulls were, they were just swaying in the strong winds. After the storm he went out and talked to his bulls. He said, "Trash cans, chickens, my best hoe....everything got blown away and scattered! How did you just stand there and sway in the tornado?" To which the bulls replied, "Haven't you heard? We bulls wobble, but we don't fall down."

    1. LOL, I cracked up with this one, Barbara! Thanks for starting my day and my comments with such a funny story. Ahh… the joys of laughter, it does get us through the dark patches. Which, as a writer, are quite frequent. hahaha

  2. Jump in with both feet, what if you have four legs? Do two hang out and two hang in? Geez, neglecting cats, how rude lol

    1. LOL…hehehehehehe - Tell wily cat The Great One (in my dreams) is most humbly sorry for not thinking of the smarter race! Cats do rule - as Jenny drools. Besides, cats are quite adept at doing the two legged shuffle - I've seen it with my own glazed-over eyes. hahaha

  3. I don't think you need to hire a professional if you're not afraid to rip your writing partner a new one. And vice versa. That's what makes us such a good team. Or at least I hope.

Also, forget boring your friends... I don't like to tell ANYONE I'm an author. It never ends well. No, the book is not going to be a movie. No, you can't get the book at Walmart. No, I don't want to hear about your terrible idea for a novel. Yes, I'm a real author. I promise.

    1. Ouch - I'm okay with my 'old' one and will kindly pass on the new, and hopefully improved, option. That said, I do have a close at hand head slapper!
But… ah, don't we like buts… I have hired a proofreader for spelling and punctuation for the book I am working on. It will be good to have some one to blame it a comma is doubling as a period!

As to friends - the few that I have encourage me, but I know better than to go fishing for kitty stroking or head patting - the slapping seems to suffice. LOL

As I said, this is a teaser post. I have a big announcement coming late May! YAY! Big Happy Dance going on - dog not so happy as I spin her around!

  4. I've managed to surround myself with friends who don't read, or who only read best sellers, so I know not to bother them about my writing ambitions even though I've had three published now. That's why the friends I've met through my blog are important to me.

    1. Ah… we sail in the same boat, down the same river, heading toward the same waterfall… Good thing is, Annalisa, our dear friends would be there for us in a minute if they new our little boat was going to tip. That's how I "use" my friends - as the last resort!

I agree… our blogging friendships are very important. I am blessed with all of you wonderful supports. Thank you! xxoo

  5. "Jump in with both feet"?
Wouldn't that be a clumsy way to write?

  6. EXACTLY what I needed to read today. All of this advice is spot on. Writing needs community--you can't do it on your own.

    1. I've been blessed with a lovely, and supportive, writing community. I have two bloggers in particular who are part of my ideal reader team. Without them I would not be at the point I am today - a book ready for publication.

You've been a most wonderful addition to my writing community, Anne Marie, I hope we stay in touch after the A to Z is over. I have enjoyed your post and your positive, uplifting energy. Big cyber hugs are coming your way, xo

I'm a sprinter when it comes to writing. Need to work on the marathon part.

    1. Ah… the sprinter! How I know those days. What with my daily writing I've found a pattern and I'm sticking to it because it works. You'll make time… when you're ready. Right now the garden is your master! I hope Turkey Camp was a success - here comes turkey jerky… :) :)

  8. Yep, and the only way to do it is one page at a time. So, I keep plugging along...
