Butchers and Bakers and...

do you know the rest of this sentence?

Well...since I have this belief that we all have a purpose I don't mess with karma in these areas.

However...

One day, I decided to bake a cake. I DO NOT BAKE CAKES - I buy them. That's why there are Bakers.

Same with meat...well, in fact, when I was young and my dad hunted we did do some of our own butchering - another blog, another day!

Now, I leave the cleavering to my local Butcher.

And as to candlestick making...well, I leave that to the Candlestick people - whoever you are!

Okay...back to my cake.

Here it is...I baked this cake for my dear friend Gerry - for his birthday!

Before
During
After...the first slice was taken *

My new best friend is Betty Crocker! But, I did do some grunt work here - so credit where credit is due.
I used real whipping cream, which I had to beat - hard work. Lucky and I licked the beater sticks - yum.

Then I bought fresh blueberries and did my thing!

I did buy Betty Crocker chocolate frosting - yup, I did! But...I had to spread it - I did pretty good for a beginner - right! (not really seeking approval here - Gerry already gave the thumbs up and I agreed)

So...I hope you enjoyed this SWEET SUNDAY!

Cheers, Jenny

  2. Looks great, bet 1000 calories a bite :)

  3. Claudia - this cake was worth every calorie! I should have shown the picture of the piece Gerry had - it was 1/4 of the cake!

All things considering - it was not a rich, heavy cake!
I would definitely make it again - my kind of baking - easy!

  11. Golden Eagle - Thanks - and I didn’t have to photoshop it to make it look so yummy.
By the way...there’s an award waiting for you on my last post!

Barb - I confess...I did save some of the frosting to enjoy with my late night page flip through I, Sniper, a great murder mystery - which I highly recommend be read with chocolate frosting.

Drake - You’re right - death by chocolate is a definite option!

Becca - Aw...I wished there was some way I could email cake...because then for sure I’d send you a piece!

Laura - Yup - Yummy, Yummy and more Yummy! It did have the WOW factor - Gerry was shocked since he knows I do not bake!

Jennifer Hillier - Hi! Glad you could drop by and enjoy my cake - yes, it is all about the whipped cream - that’s for sure!

Mynx - Ohhhh…coming from you I’m tickled...given that you bake from scratch. I always admire a true baker and you are definitely one of those!

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WONDERFUL BLOGGERS FOR DROPPING BY AND SHARING A BIT OF SUNDAY SWEETNESS WITH ME!

    Cheers, Jenny

  12. I think you're going to have to change your self talk to "I DO bake, and I do it damn well" ;)

  13. I think my doctor would beat me with a stick for even looking at that cake. But I think I would take the beating for a bite.

  14. Sue - well, I DID bake and I did it damn well - how's that! ;-)
But truly, some things are just best left to the pros - and are worth paying for!
That being said, I can now cross this little "to do" item off my bucket list - I do have a rather easy-to-accomplish list!

darev2005 - Aw...nothing is worth the beating...well, except this cake, I agree there!
It looks deadlier than it is though and overall I think the blueberries give justification for having that second slice.

    Thanks for dropping by!

  15. That cake looks fan-frikkin-tastic!
You know what I make for dinner? Reservations.
    BA DUM BUM.

  16. Al - me too, but occasionally I need to pull out the stops and appear like I care; and...nothing says I care like a platinum Visa card or, dare I say, this cake!

I'm cooking up some posts - that I think you will like - old family recipes that must be okay since we are all still alive!

    Cheers, Jenny

  17. Oh my, that is just MY sort of cake. Looks so scrummy! Didn't you do well, and hoorah for Betty Crocker!

  18. Thisisme - Well...they must do something right at the lab where they create these cake mixes because I was darned impressed - but mostly it was the look on Gerry's face that cracked me up.

He didn't know I was baking an actual "real" cake because usually for his BD I purchase a slice for each of us and make a nice spot of tea and Bob's your uncle!

So...when I hauled out this puppy from the fridge he just about had a coronary - and that was before eating the cake!

Anyway...it was fun, and I doubt it will be the last cake I bake, given the ease - and as I type...is that a cake I smell merrily baking away in my oven!

    Cheers, Jenny

  19. a pretty damn good betty crocker cake if i have ever seen one... mine usually fall to the side, apparently i have not mastered the art of evening out the filling i put in the centre!

  20. Average Girl - Hi! Thanks for dropping by.
Well, I share your concern...I was worried that I wouldn't cut it in half evenly - I kept stopping and starting to check and make sure it was about even all the way around. Note how I only showed the cake's "good" side!

    Cheers, Jenny

  21. Oh, yeah, sometimes I make calls to Dominos.

  22. Al - do you smell that Lemon Cake...I'm making it for a hungry mermaid who's coming for dinner tomorrow.

Does lightening strike twice is the question - and will this puppy turn out as yummy. Yikes...the pressure is on, I've created a monster (that would be me!) and now the self-imposed pressure is on!

    Cross your fingers...pictures to follow!

    Cheers, Jenny

  23. It was all going so well and then you had to go and ruin it with healthy fruit.....

P.S. Top tip for future “after shots” ...Empty plate with a few crumbs and smears of chocolate, otherwise it looks like people didn't really like it....

  24. BlackLOG - Too true, too true - I should have stressed that picture was taken "after" the first slice had been cut by Gerry - it was like a quarter of the cake - we laughed ourselves silly.
He took home about half and I had the pleasure of making my way through the crumbs, because that truly was all that was left!

I'll heed your excellent photographic input on tomorrow's offerings...which will be some sort of Lemon concoction! Not really sure...cake is baked but icing is questionable!

Glad you could drop in - always a slice!

    Cheers, Jenny

  25. I'm a DEAR friend, where is my cake? And don't use that whipped cream frosting crap. I want the death inducing, sugar coated realness of frosting. That is, if it would get through customs.

  28. ib - You are a DEAR friend...but how does one mail a slice?
The whip cream was just in the middle - the death inducing stuff you crave was all over the outside! Man...you boys and icing!

Eric Emard - Thanks for dropping by!
Of course, you get the "real" benefit of my domestic talents being that you are dating a gorgeous mermaid I know!
If you're coming for dinner tonight then it's a Lemon and Raspberry Cake...double Yum!

Marina - Hi! Thanks for dropping by and checking out Pearson Report!
How can one not do a great job...all the hard work was done by my assistant Betty C -she's so reliable, and sweet!

Thanks to you all for coming by and taking a look!
